How Your Branding Appears and How to Customize It

When you are ready to build a course on the Lagunita platform, the Course Operations team in the VPTL department takes information you submit in the Course Request Form to create the course. This in effect creates the brand for your class.

Three of the entries you fill in - the Organization, the Course Number and the Run - are used to create the course's URL. Once we create a course URL, we cannot change these values.

These values are used in your course URL as illustrated below:

The information provided for these three fields is used in a number of locations, with the Course Number field being the most widely used of the three.

ORGANIZATION

The organization you provide should refer to the school or department with which your class is most closely associated. This name will appear in the course URL and also in the following locations:

At the top of every page of your course.

Beneath the course name in your dashboard.

(For public courses) On your course's image tile in the public course listing page.

Customize the Organization

You can change what displays here by going to the Advanced Settings in Studio for your course.  In Studio, click on the Settings menu item and select "Advanced Settings".

From here, find the "Course Organization Display String" field.  By default, it should say null.  This will cause whatever was provided when the course was created to appear in the course site.  Replace null with a course organization of your choice, wrapped in quotation marks.  Save your changes when you're done.  This change will apply to wording within the course site, but will not affect the course URL, which cannot be changed once it has been created.

COURSE NUMBER

The course number for on-campus courses should be formatted like a real course number, and in some cases may even correspond to an on-campus course number (such as "HRP258").

For public courses, please make up a short course abbreviation (such as "Solar") or course abbreviation-and-number combination ("QMSE02") that won't overlap with the numbering system used for on-campus courses.

The course number should be no longer than 15 characters, and should not contain any spaces or special symbols or characters.

The course number you give to your course will display in the course URL and also:

On the About page for your course before a participant has registered for it.

In the sidebar on the About page.

At the top of every page of your course.

In your dashboard.

In the email and un-enroll option settings from your dashboard.

(For public courses) On your course's image tile in the public course listing page.

Customize the Course Number

You can change what displays in these locations by going to the Advanced Settings page in Studio.  Click on the Settings menu item at the top of the page and select "Advanced Settings".  Find the "Course Number Display String" field.  By default, it should say null, which means that whatever course number was used to create your course will appear in these locations for this course.

Replace null with a course number or course abbreviation of your choice, wrapped in quotation marks.

This change will apply to wording within the course site and on the dashboard and course listing pages, but will not affect the course URL, which cannot be changed once it has been created.

Please note: While you can replace null or a string wrapped in quotes with an empty string - " " - to omit text in one location, this may result in strange displays in other locations, such as a blank "Register for" button, and is not recommended.

RUN

The run refers to the term, year and /or period in which the course will become available to an audience. In some cases, it is appropriate to enter a term like "Ongoing" or "SelfPaced" if your class will have no deadlines or will not be instructor-led with content being released weekly.  In most cases, you can enter something like Fall2018.

The information provided for the course run does not display in the course site, and is not customizable after the course has been created.

COURSE DISPLAY NAME

You are also asked to choose a name for your course.  This can be edited at a later time by you if you wish.  To customize your course's name, click on the Settings menu item at the top of the page and select "Advanced Settings".  Find the "Course Display Name" field.  By default, it will display the name you provided in the Course Request Form in quotes.

Replace this name with a name of your choice, wrapped in quotation marks.
